Final meaningful Essay

In the course of this year our main goal has been to find out what makes life meaningful or meaningless. What makes life meaningful and how people live there lives meaningful or meaningless while opening our minds to newer ideas. We will never have a definite definition of what is a good and meaningful life but we can share our own ideas of what we think, thought we may not agree we are all humans and we all live together on this planet. The question “what is our purpose on earth?” and “what were we put here for?” I find is asked a lot by people. I personally think we were put here for a reason so why not make the best of it, life is a playground, go have fun with it. How do we know where not living in a dream, that what we see is real. I think being able to question our own reality is also part of living a good and meaningful life, if we believe everything we hear what would our world be like. We live in a society that has a double standard. If you don’t follow the morals of the society then you aren’t living a good and meaningful life, and if your following the rules then you are living a good and meaningful life. I think fulfilling your own personal happiness is all you need to live a good and meaningful life. Why should anyone have control over how you make your own happiness. In our society we are taught from a young age what is right and wrong. But how do we really know what is right and wrong when the only thing we have to base it off from is what we have been told. The story we read in class about the guy who had to choose between saving an infant baby on train tracks or a expensive car he spent his whole life saving for is a good example of how everyone would raise there hand to save the baby because it’s a breathing living thing unlike the car that is just a accessory. How do you determine the importance of something, and are you a bad person for choosing the “materialistic” item over the human being. How do we really know what the right choices in life are. I say whatever makes you happy because I feel your own happiness is the only thing I can control. You cant control how society sees you, but you can control what makes you happy and I think if your happy what’s wrong with life. I find that when I’m happy I don’t focus on the little “bad” things going on in life.

The idea of a good and meaningful life affects us physically as well as mentally. We look upon fat people as bad and skinny people as good. That because your fat your not living a good and meaningful life because your too busy eating and damaging your body. You will never see an “over weight” male or female on the cover of vanity fare or Glamour because its not the idea they want to sell. The only place you will see an overweight person on a magazine is if its TMZ or another tabloid magazine. Our society is very superficial in the in the idea that only a size 2 person is beautiful when we all come in different shapes and sizes. Why let society telling how we should look control and affect how we live a good life.

At the beginning of the year we went outside and asked random people in the street was meaningful in there lives. A lot of people said there friends, family and children. Money, love and there pets. Being able to live comfortably without having to worry about if the bills are late and if you have enough money to get through the week I think is a good life in my opinion. Then there’s people like Paris Hilton who were given all the money they have and didn’t have to work for it. Do they deserve it? Are they living good and meaningful lives because it was handed to them? We look at this as not being fair but how can we judge other people. At the end of the day you are the only one who controls your life and you get to make any decision you want, do what makes you happy. But in my opinion you should go outside and do something fun because sitting on your ass all day doesn’t seam so fun. theres always options, choose the best one.

Collapse assignment #1

After reading about the easter island, something intresting i noticed was that these polynesian indiginous people were able to build 20 foot structures without any form technoligy. what i also found intresting was the island ecosystem was going through a change deforestation occured and extinction of plants happened.

Comparing what happened to this civilization to our own, i see us going in the same direction because we are currently going throught a state of global warming and this could possibly lead to our own dissaperence off the face of the earth. the differences are extremly visable, our society is dependent on industrialistic machinary. without it our society would collapse resulting in a demise in our population. On the other hand the eatser island people were hunter and gather's depending on there enviroment only to survive and relying on each other.

I can also connect this to when dinosaurs roamed the planet, they were also hunters and gather's and become extinct by a natural disaster.

Final Food Essay.

When we go to the supermarket, there’s a section for every kind of food. The Frozen section, the canned foods section and the section for fruits, vegetables and meats. When we look at the fruits and vegetables section in the supermarket the image of them being grown on a farm , sitting in the sun being taken cared of by farmers usually comes in mind because, that’s what industry commercials on T.V display to us. When in reality there being modified and sprayed with pesticides. Nor are they being hand grown by farmers, but are industrialized for production. Same goes for the meat industry. The abuse of animals has increased dramatically. The reason for why food industries must abuse there animals to get from them what they want is very unclear to me. There are more humane ways to kill an animal and its not to slit its throat and electrocute it. The living conditions as well for these animals is kept private because they don’t want us to know what they do to the animals before its sent to the nearest McDonalds or Wendy’s. The cows at a lot of these industrial places are kept in small confined areas with many other cows and its impossible for them to move and it adds stress onto the cow. The feed they also give the cows is meant to fatten the cows very quickly which isn’t healthy for the cows and it affects the quality of the meat. For the unfortunate chickens that get to be killed for McDonalds menu’s, the chickens are kept in unhealthy living conditions are beaten, electrocuted and have there throats slit before being into chicken nuggets or chicken sandwiches. By doing this to the chickens, they become extremely stressed making the chicken unhealthy, and making the chicken itself unhealthy. We may think that there may be one or two things on the menu that could possible be healthy but no. even the salads from McDonalds contain sugar and from the McDonalds Website it states “None of our products is certified as vegetarian” They also claim that 50% of there chicken nuggets are actually meat. I think that’s a bunch of shit because chicken is only one ingredient & there about 500 other ingredients so I don’t see how that takes up half. http://nutrition.mcdonalds.com/nutritionexchange/itemDetailInfo.do
There’s probably a percentage of Americans that do know this already but what percentage of Americans actually change there eating habits because of it.

America is big on the food industry because it’s a system that can make a lot more artificial food and it will cost us less but this system is affecting Americans health. In the present 1 in every 3 children is overweight or obese. The people who work at these slaughter houses are usually immigrants who will do a lot for very little pay. A lot of what they make these workers do is very dangerous, working with high powered and very sharp objects. A lot of these workers become severely injured and cannot work but have to because they cannot afford to take days off from there jobs. We rely on food to keep us alive and healthy. Food industries make it hard for us to make healthy decisions on food because fast food like McDonalds and Wendy’s is so accessible to us. Its much cheaper then going to the store and buying fruit that is expensive in some places. Its also comes faster then having to come home and cook all day. Because of all the artificial flavors and chemicals they put in fast food it taste good and makes us want to come back for more. The government sees the increase of health problems within the United States like heart Diseases, high blood pressure and diabetes within adults and children. It seams impossible to buy healthy food because its to expensive and the un healthy food is very cheap. Growing our own looks to be the only other option because there seams to be no other alternative for the industrial food system. I think we don’t speak up about the problem is because its not directly in front of our faces, we don’t see the damage it does and it makes it harder for us to do anything about it. I think the Future for American isn’t going to be good, the percentage of BMI (body mass index) for the average healthy person has increased dramatically meaning people are coming more overweight and obese. Its becoming harder for people to exercise and eat right, people are dying at younger ages and we seams to be ignoring the reason why.

Micheal Pollan's Argument

For this assignment please respond briefly to Michael Pollan's argument, in the first few pages of Omnivore's Dilemma, that we as a culture lack a stable food culture like the Italians or French, are obsessed with health, are confused and anxious about food, and therefore easily succumb to various expert-directed food fads.

What food experts do you and your family pay attention to - scientists, journalists, chefs, commercials on tv, doctors, nutritionists, health officials, book authors?

I think that his point is true that we obsess about food so much that we end up doing the wrong thing and adding extra stress if were doing it right and looking for fast results when it takes time. i think we do depend on other sources of food experts because i think we think with every new idea were gonna get different results and the thing is the results are all the same. it doesnt work.

my family watches the food network alot and thats where my moms gets alot of ideas for recipes and ideas for dinner. my aunt depends on exersise videos for her to work out thinking that its gonn make her slimmer & my uncle does his own thing and eats wat he wants and hes actually quite skinny.

May Day

Looking at the wikipedia website to get information about may day i think its kinda stupid. We cant even remember when they day is, if you went into the street and asked 100 people what day is may day and what's it about i don't think half those people are going to remember. we don't really celebrate it because we have forgotten about it. i don't think people even care about the holiday because its not as important as christmas and thanksgiving because there's nothing to do to celebrate it. And the website says the United States has its own labor day that isn't in may but at the beginning of september so we have two different things going on.

Grocery Store Shooping

When me and my mom go to the Grocery store my mother buys grapes and bananas, sometimes peaches and plums for herself. We don't buy fruits and vegetables and grains daily or weekly. my mom buys fruit for herself daily but vegetables and grains we don't buy at all. were not big vegetable and grain eaters. we are meat eaters.

Usually when i go into my supermarket they have all the fruit and vegetables right by the entrance. kinda hinting that thats the first thing they want you to see so they want you to buy more of it because it spoils quick and they want to get rid of it.

I've never really been taught to eat a wide variety of foods. or i've been givin the food and i refuse to eat it because I'm to picky or i just don't like it. My favorite meal is the one we have every sunday which is fried chicken cutlet with white rice. and a pattern i see with myself is I have to snack until i go to bed because if i dot feel full i cant sleep because it temps me to get up and eat something.

FOOD! at home and food from outside.

How do you do food at home? How do people in the U.S. mainstream do food - as shown in TV and movies? Please write a one page comparison of your family's foodways, your foodways, and mainstream corporate US food ways.

At home my mother cooks mostly everyday. its only a couple times a month that we take out. maybe 3 or 4 times in a month. my mother cooks with no salt or butter & uses alot of low fat meat because shes a health freak. we cook alot of food thats from our culture which is spanish. it consist of alot of rice & beans and rich flavors. we have big portions because we both eat alot of food. were big snackers so the food that takes up most of the kitchen are snacks.

I think people in U.S mainstream do food unhealthy. there thousands of fast food places which makes it really hard to make good decisions about what we eat. On TV there are constantly commercials for Taco bell, Wendys, KFC, McDonalds and Popeyes and when it looks really good it makes us want to go there and get some food. You have movies like Herald & Kumar go to white castle and Super Size me that are for and against unhealthy food.

Comparing my way of food & my familys way of food to Mainstream U.S. its very different. in my house everything is made from scracth and is made with healthier ingrediants then wat the U.S uses now. no preservatives and added ingrediants like coloring and sugar. my family like to cook authentic spanish food and the kind of food thats being sold now isnt very authentic. for example Taco Bell, its supposed to be mexican food but it isnt really because its fast food, its been modified to fit the american way of mexican. another example can be the Olive garden, its the fast food version of italian food, it isnt made in italy & served to you. My mom doesnt use commericals and advertisments to get me to eat dinner, knowing that its made fresh makes me want to eat it. thats why were the fattest nation in thw world.

Question about Food.

Why is it easier for americans to buy food thats not good for us then to buy food thats good for us?

I wondered Why was it easier to go to a fast food place and get an entire meal for about six dollars. A meal meaning ur main item, a side dish and something to drink, but not be able to take that same amount of money and get something much healthier. it makes it seams like america doesnt want us to be healthier. the main argument would be that we have the choice weather or not we have to get the fast food making it our fault. but when theres almost atleast 1 fast food place on every block on new york city, its cheaper and it the taste is very satisfying how are we expected to really make the better decision when there isnt a fair option.

My answer to this question would be that its much cheaper for fast food companies to make more of man made products that cost much less and add hundreds of ingediants and chemicals to it so that it taste really good and make us want to keep buying it because its cheap and taste good. i also think its a mental thing, that because we keep the memory in our heads that we enjoyed it and it didnt cost alot of money it will always stay an option for us. This point is also made in the Movie Super Size me Directed by & featured Morgan Spurlock showing how living on an all fast food diet is deadly to someones life & also showing how easy it was for him to become unhealthy very quickly.

In internets answer for why this is "Although many people find it hard to afford fresh fruits and vegetables for their family, the U.S. government can help by supplying Food Stamps and coupons that are redeemable at farmers markets to those in need."
The key word in that sentence being "MANY"

Whats in my refrigerator?

So i went into my refrigerator and what i found inside is that i have...
#1-Milk
#2-water
#3-V8 Splash Juice
#4-Butter
#5-Grapes
#6-Bread Pudding
#7-Pound Cake
#8-Yohgurt
#9-Syrup
#10-BBQ sauce
#11-Minced garlic
#12-Recaito/Sofrito
#13-mayo
#14-caramel Sauce
#15- french Onion Dip
#16-Tomato Sauce
#17-Cheese

And for my freezer there is...
#1-Garlic bread
#2-PIzzas (5)
#3- Ice Cream
#4-Chicken
#5-ice cubes

What i think about whats in my refrigerator shows me that mine isnt really different from alot of other peoples. what this list shows about food is that us as americans are too lazy to make the food our selfs so we buy food thats already been made for us and we dont really kno whats been put into it but because it taste good we figure its not hurting us and to keep buying it. it shows us that its easier to buy food thats cheaper in larger quantities because all the ingrediants in it are artifical and man made so its easier to make more of it for cheaper.

My Emotional Health

Please pay attention to your emotions over this break. At what points do you feel emotionally healthiest? Least healthy? What's going on that affects your emotional health? What actions can you take to support your own emotional well-being?

Is emotionally healthy the same thing as "constantly happy"? If not, what is it, to you?

How do the theories of the therapies we researched connect to your ideas about emotional health?

-Through out this break i have been paying attention to my emotional health. What ive noticed about my own emotional health is that if im sitting at home doing nothing my emotional health isnt good because im bored. Im the type of person that always likes to be doing something because it makes me happy, to be interacting with people or doing something constructive, cleaning, cooking, going out and having fun.

A point in my break when i felt emotionally healthiest was at night because i knew that i didnt have to go to school the next day so i could stay out as late as i wanted to. The least healthiest would be when i woke up in the morrning becuase ive been sick all spring break so i really felt it when i woke up.

if it wasent spring break and we were in school i would proably feel emotionally healthiest at lunch because its a rest for my mind and i get to eat and interact with people that i like. least emotioanlly healthiest would be any point in the day that isnt lunch because im tired from getting up so early.

In my everyday life things that effect my emmotional health are people, school, the weather, how my body is reacting to all this (if im sick)things in my house like the TV and my X-Box. if one of those breaks i wouldnt be emotinally happy anymore.

Thing things in do to maintain my emotional happiness is makin sure i always have my ipod in the morning so that i have something to listen to when i walk to school, it relaxes me. my sidekick, because when i feel like im not able to keep in contact with people it makes me really mad. So when teachers take it away from me i get angry because there taking away my source of contact and it makes my emotional health not good because im angry. Also buying stuff that makes me happy like food i like for lunch, going shopping, watch my favorite shows.

The type of phycology i chose was "humanistic Phycology" and from what i read i have the idea that it means a persons behavior has to do with there emotional health and i do agree with that on some level. because i can be very angry but i might not show it.

Humanistic Phychology

I chose to do Human Phychology because it sounded the most intresting to me because it had the word humanistic in it and i wondered what kind of therapy was that.

"Humanistic psychology is a school of psychology that emerged in the 1950s in reaction to both behaviorism and psychoanalysis. It is explicitly concerned with the human dimension of psychology and the human context for the development of psychological theory."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Humanistic_psychology

from the definition they gave i dont completly understand what kind of phychology this is but what i think its means is anyalizing someones behavior and there mental state. and how it connects together.

Animal Unit paper

Explain and analyse the most important of the 6 cultural obstacles to seeing ourselves as animals - explain and analyse the most important of the 4 benefits of seeing ourselves as animals for living a good and meaningful life. Conclude with your perspective, perhaps including additional obstacles and/or benefits.

For millions of years Humans and animals have Co-Existed. We are seperated by different parts of the world and in most cases we are sepertaed by man made things like cages and inclosed habitats. Between Humans and Animals our main goal is survival. We both live off the same basics of shelter, food and water. We also depend on companionship in order to reproduce and to feel happy that we arent alone. Obstacles for knowing that we are animals is that we cannot change we follow a system. There is a certain way we need to act around one another especially in school. Us as students dont have the option of running around and interacting with each other the way we want to because there are rules. Having to contain being ureself as an animal is fustrating when you want to go outside and be active with other people/animals.
The suck part about us being animals is that we cant really communicate with other animals that arent human like us. We can try to decode what other animals forms of communications mean but we can never really know exactly what there thinking or what they are talking about with other animals like themselfs. Being animals we need a way to eat and survive. the downfall is us Humans eat animals. So us being animals we are really eating each other.
The major downfall of being an animal is that we cant really show that we are animals at all. its alright when were little kids because were not really aware of the world and our intensions are just to be free and have fun, doing things that make us happy. No system yet to follow.

If it ever came down to where animals and Humans had to live together and survive together i think the animals would eat us all. animals seam to be very aware of us being around them and become teritorial of there space. we would end up getting eaten and killed. I think animals live on the principle of natural selection, that only the strongest will survive. survival of the fittest. so in the case that we all hade to survive together the animals arent going to worried about us they are going to worried about themselfs and alot of animals are natural predators that will kill us in a minute. it isnt really a fair fight.

Im totally taking this from andy but like he said if other animals can go extinct so can we. Humans have seamed to out live alot of animals that have lived on this earth and died out so we have a good chance of living on alot longer but theres always the possibility something will happen and all humans/animals will be gone. what will be left on our planet?. the cockroches because they always seam to adapt to all living situation(lol)

-A benefit of being an animal is that we all have the same intensions and instincts. Our intensions are to surivive and be happy. we want to be active with each other and interact. we learn from each other when we interact and it makes us happy to be natural instead of conforming ourselfs to be uptight people at school. sitting in a chair for hours everyday isnt very stimulating. getting up and moving our bodies seams to always makes us happy because it naturally what we want to do.

The first activity we did in class was play a game called "rabbit". choosing 3 people as the rabbits and we had to run around and catch them. it made everyone feel atleast one point higher on there happy scale because we had a goal and we used our natural animalistic behaviors to do so and it was better then sitting in a chair learning about stuff that wasent stimulating our minds in a fun way.

The second activity we did was rolling people over our bodies trying to get them from one point to another. that activity was really fun because we all had to work as a team in order to get the person from A to B and we were moving our bodies and had to use our minds to think about how we were going to this.

My own perspective on the animal unit is that it really has me thinking alot more about how we are really animals. we may do things differently but in ways its exactly the same. when an animal becomes agressive because another animal is invading its space they warm the aother another animal or fight and kill them. when someone is invading our space we get mad as well we just do it in such a violent way. i wonder if animals are looking at us the same way we are looking at them. wondering how we communicate.

Obamas Inogurations Ceremony.

my thoughts about Barack Obama's presidential Inoguration was that it was one of the most memorable Inogurations to date in my mind. it made me feel good to know that we might actually have change and it gave us a new found hope that things can get better. it also felt good to know that Bush will no longer be our president because it was apparent that he wasent doing us any good. Even if you werent there in person watching it you could still feel the emotion everyone was feeling and it was a powerful moment. Barack Obama makes being president look easy.

Holiday: Valentines Day

February 14th comes around every year and its the day that we celebrate to appreciate the special people in our lives that we love. we go out and buy chcoclates and flowers to show our appreciation. I think that Valentines day is a holiday that tells us to show love to our Boyfriends/girlfriends & Husbands/Wives. Valentines day isnt so loving for all of us because if you dont have anyone special to celebrate it with then it makes you look like your all alone and that no one loves you. Kinda makes you think your a loser is you cant find love. this holiday in comparison to other holidays isnt any better because were commercializing feelings. we are changing ourselfs to fit valentines day instead of the other way around. people have different ways of showing love and its not always buying flowers and chocolate or choosing one specific day.
